The Misti volcano is the emblem and guardian of Arequipa. It can be seen from almost any point in the city and is one of the most significant attractions.
Its base is located at 2,400 meters above sea level, and its summit at 5,822 meters above sea level in the Chili Valley, within the Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve, some 17 kilometers northeast of downtown Arequipa.
Its origin is estimated to be 800 thousand years ago. It is one of the 10 active volcanoes or with the possibility of becoming active in the Andes Mountains, although its last activity was recorded in 1870, with only five minimal eruptions during the twentieth century.
In colonial times, most of the buildings constructed in Arequipa were made of sillar, a white volcanic stone generated by the ashes of the Misti eruptions.
His name, in Quechua, means “man of white race” in relation to the nickname “White City” with which Arequipa is known.
