Misti Volcano Ascent Itinerary 2 days / 1 night South Route
Day 1: Arequipa – Chiguata – Misti
This exciting adventure starts between 7:30 and 8:00 in the morning, with pickup from your hotel in Arequipa (White City). We’ll board our private 4×4 vehicle and head along the Chiguata tourist route, a 1.5-hour drive, until we reach the point where our hike begins, located at 3300 masl.
We’ll start the trek ascending slowly for approximately 5 to 6 hours. This route has spectacular scenery, with terraces and traditional stone houses. Finally we’ll arrive at base camp, where we’ll have lunch and dinner together around 4:00pm, while our guide shares his experiences and tells us stories about the volcano. We’ll need to go to bed early to prepare our bodies for the next day.
Day 2: Crater View – Misti – Arequipa
We’ll wake up in the early morning around 2:00am, have a hearty breakfast and begin our summit ascent for 5 to 6 hours until reaching 5825 masl, where the volcano’s crater is located. We’ll observe its large fumaroles up close while appreciating the impressive landscape from above, the surrounding valleys and the city of Arequipa. We’ll take lots of photos and it’ll be time to start our return journey.
We’ll descend to base camp for an hour and a half, pack up and continue descending to the point where our transport will be waiting to take us to the city of Arequipa, arriving around 2 in the afternoon.
