Paramonga Fortress

Paramonga Fortress

The archaeological complex has its origins in the Chimú human settlement, built in the Late Intermediate Period (1100-1400 A.D.) and later occupied by the Incas (1440-1532 A.D.).

Its main building is the so-called Fortaleza, built on a large rocky promontory located in the valley of the Fortaleza River. It is a pyramid of adobe structures, formed by four solid platforms with enclosures at the top. Its adobe walls are straight and follow the irregularities of the terrain, forming pentagonal platforms, with buttresses at the corners.

The maximum height of the building is 30 meters. The entrance area is formed by a set of openings, passages and ramps. In the upper part, where most of the buildings are concentrated, there are two rooms of equal size and distribution, with niches in the walls, separated by a narrow passageway; a long room with friezes with evidence of original bright red, white and ocher paint.
